What is your impression of the characters and scenes in this section of the novel?

In particular, is Sal still (hopefully still?) likable even though he's miserable throughout a decent portion of this section of the novel? Memory jog for other characters/scenes: Sal cancelling on Herbie, the lesson with Pamina, the guys at cards, Sal's birthday with his family, discussions with Zayne, and running into Herbie with Fipo, the punching of the duke.
